You can plan a trip to Kiruna and Abisko without hiring a car, but the connections deserve as much attention as the accommodation. Choose your arrival date, overnight stops and final transfer before booking separate non-refundable tickets. Distances are significant, and a missed connection can have a larger cost than a slightly more expensive room.
Choose between a city base and a mountain base
Kiruna suits travellers who want city services and organised excursions. Abisko suits those who want to stay closer to the national park. Compare the transport needed for your actual activities: commuting between the two can use both time and money. For sightseeing ideas, see our Kiruna guide.
Book the right stop for your accommodation
Abisko Östra and Abisko Turiststation are different stops. Confirm the correct one with your property before buying the ticket. The national park’s official visitor information identifies Abisko Turist as the station inside the park and describes the onward walk to STF Abisko Turiststation and naturum. Ask about the walking route and luggage if you arrive after dark.
For Kiruna, confirm the current arrival location and onward transfer with the operator and your accommodation. Do not rely on a saved map or assume every long-distance train connects with a local bus. Check the complete outward and return journeys for your chosen dates.
Travel update: checked 7 September 2026
Trafikverket reports platform reconstruction at Abisko Turiststation, with completion planned for early October 2026. Its notice says boarding during the remaining construction period uses designated carriages and areas. Check your train operator’s instructions and any replacement arrangements before departure. This is a dated update; recheck the project notice for travel later in the season.
Control the cost of a northern trip
Compare a seat, couchette and sleeper where offered for your journey, including any reservation charges. Add local transfers, accommodation, food and booked activities. A kitchen can help with meals, but confirm that it is available for your room type and check where you can buy supplies.
Spend several nights in one base if that reduces transfers. Reserve paid excursions selectively and read cancellation conditions. Neither clear skies nor northern lights can be guaranteed, so choose a trip you would still enjoy in cloudy weather. Our Lapland ideas can help you compare activities.
Keep outdoor plans flexible
Choose walks suited to the season, weather and your experience. Ask for current trail conditions and daylight information locally, carry appropriate clothing, and avoid making your return depend on an ambitious walk. Check visitor-centre and activity opening times for your dates rather than assuming a summer programme continues.
