An autumn trip to Dalarna without a car is easier if you choose a clear base. Falun and Mora both have travel centres and are good places to start planning. Choose your travel days and connections first, then accommodation and excursions. Do not try to fit the whole landscape into a short weekend.
Falun or Mora as a base?
Falun suits a stay where you want to combine city walks with culture and nearby nature. Mora is an option if you want the Siljan area as your starting point. Compare the route from the accommodation to your arrival point and to the stop you will use for excursions. An address outside the town centre can require completely different planning.
Dalatrafik’s route 350 connects Mora, Rättvik and Falun. Search each journey for the right date in the current journey planner; routes, stops and services can vary. Do not plan a late connection from an old timetable.
A relaxed plan for three days
Day one: arrive at your chosen base, buy food and take a short walk near your accommodation. Day two: choose one main excursion that works by public transport in both directions. Day three: add an activity near the station before the journey home. This plan leaves room for autumn weather and delays.
If you want to visit Orsa or a smaller village, check the last bus back first. A short distance on the map does not mean frequent departures. Ask your accommodation whether there is a safe footpath from the stop when carrying luggage.
Choose a hostel by the last kilometre
In Hostel.se’s hostel search you can compare accommodation in Dalarna. Prioritise places that confirm autumn opening, arrival time and access to a kitchen. Check whether sheets and cleaning are included and whether you can leave your luggage after check-out.
Build a budget that holds
Add up the train or long-distance coach, local transport, number of nights, food and any entrance fees. Compare staying in one base with changing accommodation: an extra transfer can eat up the saving on a cheaper room. Walks near your accommodation can make a lovely autumn day without an extra excursion on paid transport.
Practical autumn checks
Pack rain protection and shoes for wet ground. Choose your walks according to the weather and daylight, and check local conditions before you leave the town. Also read Sweden without a car for planning a longer trip.
