Gotland in autumn suits you if you want to give Visby and the island’s food experiences more time. A trip after the summer can give you more dates to compare, but low season is no guarantee of a lower total price. Start with the journey to the island, the accommodation’s opening times and how you will get back after an excursion.
Visby as a base without a car
For a short autumn weekend, a base in Visby is a practical option. Compare the walking route from your arrival point to the activities you choose. Accommodation outside the town can be good value if local transport suits both arrival and departure. Also check the last kilometre with luggage.
Plan the ferry or flight and the accommodation together. A cheap departure that requires an extra hotel night on the mainland can turn out to be the more expensive choice. If you fly, you can start with the guide between Visby Airport and the town and then check current departures.
Gotland Taste Festival, 25–27 September 2026
Gotland Taste Festival takes place on 25–27 September 2026. The festival brings together local food and drink producers, and Visby is a clear starting point for several parts of the programme. Choose your activities before booking accommodation so that you know which evenings and transport you need.
The festival is described as free to enter, with exceptions: the dinners in Klosterlängan, the Smakbussen and the drinks booklets for Dryckesruinen require separate tickets. Food, purchases and travel also need to fit in your budget. Read the organiser’s current programme and booking terms before you count an activity as free.
A plan for two nights
First day: check in and take a walk in Visby. Second day: choose a festival activity or an excursion that can be done as a round trip without a car. Last day: keep the programme close to your departure point and leave a margin for collecting luggage and checking in for the journey home.
Compare hostels by the full cost
Search in Hostel.se’s hostel search and check autumn opening directly with the accommodation. Ask about a guest kitchen, sheets, cleaning, late check-in and luggage storage. Calculate accommodation, the journey to the island, local transport and activities separately. Compare the festival weekend with another autumn weekend if your dates are flexible.
Check before you go
Autumn opening hours can be shorter than summer ones. Do not book an excursion from an old summer timetable, and check the journey home before you leave Visby. For more advice on connections and accommodation, read Sweden without a car.
The festival details were checked on 7 September 2026 against Gotland’s official festival page. Check the programme again close to departure.
