Gothenburg on a Budget – Where to Stay and How to Get Around

A budget trip to Gothenburg starts with the location of your bed and the journeys you will actually make. Compare accommodation, local transport, food and optional activities together. A lower nightly rate is less useful if every outing needs a long transfer or your late arrival requires a taxi.

Choose a base that suits your plans

Central accommodation can work well for a short visit with luggage. Linné and nearby western neighbourhoods are alternatives to compare if you prefer cafés and everyday city life. For an event, check the route to the venue and the return journey after it finishes. Ask the property about reception hours before choosing a late arrival.

Compare a dorm bed with a shared private room using the same number of guests. Check linen, cleaning, breakfast and cancellation terms. A guest kitchen can make a meaningful difference if you use it for breakfast and a packed lunch. Start with our guide to budget accommodation in Sweden.

Compare single journeys with a day ticket

Västtrafik offers 24-hour and 72-hour day tickets. Zone A covers Gothenburg and neighbouring municipalities including Mölndal, Partille and Öckerö. Check your exact journey in the current planner: a ticket for one zone does not cover an unrelated journey outside it.

If you will mainly walk, separate tickets may suit you better than a pass. If you plan several tram, bus or ferry trips, compare the current day-ticket price with those journeys. Buy and activate the appropriate ticket before boarding. For an airport arrival, use our separate Gothenburg airport transport guide and check the current service and fare.

A low-cost two-day plan

Spend the first day exploring the centre on foot, with time for a self-catered lunch or a café stop. Choose one paid attraction that matters to you instead of buying tickets just to fill the day. Our Gothenburg sights guide can help you make that choice.

For day two, consider the southern archipelago if the weather and timetable suit you. Västtrafik serves the islands within Zone A. Check departure points, the last return service and the ticket conditions for the route you select. Bring food and a windproof layer; do not assume seasonal cafés will be open.

Make your budget specific

Write down return travel, accommodation for your actual nights, local tickets, food and entrance fees. Leave room for a changed plan in poor weather. Compare weekdays and weekends, and check whether a concert or major fair falls on your dates. This guide does not assume that a particular neighbourhood or season always has the cheapest room.
