You can see a large part of Sweden without driving. Intercity trains connect the main cities, regional buses reach smaller towns, and public ferries open up islands and archipelagos. The key is to build the trip around transport hubs and choose accommodation within a realistic walk of the final stop.
Car-free travel is easiest when you check the last connection first, then work backwards to the long-distance train or bus.
The easiest car-free routes
Stockholm–Gothenburg and Stockholm–Malmö are straightforward rail corridors. Malmö and Lund work well as a paired city break. In Gothenburg, trams and public ferries cover the city and southern archipelago. From Visby, regional buses can support selected Gotland trips, but rural frequency requires careful planning.

How to plan the last mile
A property described as being in a destination may still be kilometres from the station. Check the walking route, hills, lighting and luggage conditions. Ask whether the hostel has bicycle storage or can arrange a transfer when public transport is limited.
Tickets and missed connections
