Top 10 Things to Do in Stockholm – Old Town, Islands & Museums

Built across 14 islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, Stockholm is one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals — a city of cobbled old-town lanes, world-class museums, and easy access to open water and forest. In our 20+ years helping travellers find budget-friendly places to stay across Sweden, Stockholm is the destination guests ask about most, so we’ve pulled together the ten experiences we recommend first, along with practical advice on getting around and where to base yourself.

1) Gamla Stan (The Old Town)

One of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe. Wander the narrow lanes around Stortorget square, find the alley Mårten Trotzigs Gränd (just 90 cm wide at its narrowest), and visit the Royal Palace. Go early morning or evening to beat the day-tripper crowds.

2) Vasa Museum

Home to a near-complete 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia, and standing beside the 69-metre hull is genuinely humbling. Book a timed ticket in summer.

3) Djurgården Island

A green royal island packed with attractions: the open-air museum Skansen, the ABBA Museum, Gröna Lund amusement park, and quiet waterside walking paths. Easy to spend a full day here — bring a picnic.

4) Fotografiska

A leading contemporary photography museum on the Södermalm waterfront, open late most nights. The top-floor café has one of the best free views over the harbour — worth the visit on its own.

5) Södermalm’s Neighbourhoods

The city’s creative heart. Explore the vintage shops and cafés of SoFo, climb to the Monteliusvägen viewpoint for a panorama over the water and Old Town, and settle into one of the independent coffee roasters that define Stockholm’s fika culture.

6) City Hall (Stadshuset)

The venue for the annual Nobel Prize banquet, with its Golden Hall of 18 million mosaic tiles. Guided tours run daily, and in summer you can climb the tower for a sweeping view across the city.

7) Take to the Water

Stockholm is defined by water, and the cheapest way to see it is public-transport ferry line 80, which is covered by a standard SL travel card. For something more active, rent a kayak from Kungsholmen in summer.

8) The Stockholm Archipelago

Some 30,000 islands stretch east from the city. Even on a short trip you can take a Waxholmsbolaget ferry to Vaxholm, Grinda, or Fjäderholmarna (just 25 minutes out) for swimming, seafood, and classic red-cabin scenery.

9) The Metro Art Tour

Stockholm’s metro is often called the world’s longest art gallery, with more than 90 stations decorated by artists. Ride the blue line and step off at T-Centralen, Kungsträdgården, and Solna Centrum to see the most striking cavern-painted platforms — all for the price of a single ticket.

10) Day Trip to Drottningholm

A UNESCO World Heritage royal palace with a preserved 18th-century theatre and Baroque gardens, reachable by a scenic hour-long boat ride from the city centre in summer. A relaxed half-day escape.

Where to Stay in Stockholm

Staying central saves you time and transport money. Södermalm and Norrmalm put you within walking distance of most sights, while Vasastan offers a quieter, local feel. Browse our independently reviewed hostels in Stockholm to compare locations, facilities, and prices, and book directly with the property.

Best Time to Visit

June to August brings long days, warm water, and every attraction open — but also peak prices, so book beds early. May and September are our favourites: mild weather, thinner crowds, and lower rates. Winter is dark and cold but magical around Christmas, with markets in Gamla Stan.

Getting Around

The SL network of metro, bus, tram, and ferry covers the whole city on one travel card — buy a 24- or 72-hour pass for unlimited rides. Central Stockholm is very walkable, and the city’s bike-share and rental options make warm-weather exploring easy. From Arlanda Airport, the Arlanda Express reaches the centre in 20 minutes, while airport coaches are cheaper if you have time.
